2024
After retiring I have had more time for traveling, and have been photographing around the world from the Arctic to Antarctica. I have not done much photography around the UCI campus; but include a few recent photos below.
Comet
Tsuchinshan-ATLAS photograped from the viewpoint at the top of the Ecological Preserve on October 14, 2024.
After looping around the sun the comet displayed an anti-tail, made from dust that has recently been left behind by the comet in its orbital plane around the sun. When the Earth passed through this plane on October 14 this residual debris wasilluminated by the sun and reflects back to Earth, giving the impression of a second tail.
The eastside Las Lomas apartments are being demolishedto make way for a high densitytownhouse development.Sad to see them go, as this was my first home when I came to UCI almost 40 years ago.
A long gap since I last uploaded photos of UCI - the easing of covid travel restrictions allowed me to finally make a thrice-postponed trip to photograph wildlife in Japan.
At home, a series of atmospheric rivers brought record snowfall to the local mountains and heavy rain on campus.
